A Guest’s Guide to Verbania

Set on the western shore of Lake Maggiore, Verbania is known for its gardens, easy access to the Borromean Islands and views that stretch from the water to the surrounding mountains. In September, the days are still warm and the lake is at its best. We hope you’ll have time to arrive early, stay a little longer, and make the most of this corner of northern Italy.

In and Around Verbania

Giardini Botanici di Villa Taranto

Widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading botanical gardens. September is a particularly good time to visit, as its most serene and everything still in bloom.

Lakeside strolls

Walk the promenades of Pallanza, Intra and Suna, stopping for espresso, gelato or simply the view.

Old Town Intra

Cobbled streets, and a compact historic centre with small shops, local bars and restaurants. Easy to explore on foot and good for an unplanned afternoon.

On the Water

Regular ferries run from Pallanza and Intra to nearby towns and the Borromean Islands. It’s an easy half-day outing and a good way to see the lake without a car.

Borromean Islands

Take a boat trip on Lake Maggiore to explore the Borromean Islands each with gardens, palaces and unique charm. See the terraces of Isola Bella, the botanical gardens of Isola Madre, and stay over lunch on Isola dei Pescatori.

Stresa

Explore other lakeside towns nearby such as Stresa or Baveno, easily reached by ferry or car, both offering promenades, restaurants and additional sights.

Sunset boat rides

Private and shared boat trips can be arranged locally, offering a practical way to explore the lake and nearby islands from the water.

Day Trips

Lake Orta

A smaller, quieter lake close to Verbania. The village of Orta San Giulio is easy to explore on foot and well suited to a half-day trip. Several options for restaurants.

Where the lake gives way to the Alps, offering mountain air and historic squares.

Locarno

A Swiss-Italian blend of palm trees, cafés and lake views, just over the border.
